Blast campaign settings for multi-location businesses: Overview & Setup

Overview of Boulevard's marketing access for blast campaigns and how primary location is calculated for your clients.

Written by Skya Jones

Boulevard has settings that give multi-location businesses and franchisors control over which clients each location can market to. With Blast campaign client settings, you decide whether any location can reach any client, or whether locations can only reach the clients tied to them as their primary location. This helps prevent overlap and unauthorized communication across locations, while still giving individual locations the freedom to run their own local marketing campaigns.

This article covers:

  • How Blast campaign client settings work

  • How a client's primary location is calculated

  • How to view your eligible client breakdown by location

  • What happens to clients who don't have an assigned primary location

Who is this for? Multi-location businesses, franchises, and enterprise businesses with regional or location managers.

Blast campaign client settings

Blast campaign client settings determine which clients each of your locations is allowed to include when sending a Text Blast or Email Blast campaign. You'll choose one of two options at the business level:

  • All clients – Any client in the business can receive a blast from any location.

  • Primary clients only – Only clients assigned to the same primary location as the staff member sending the blast campaign can receive it.

To update your Blast campaign client settings:

  1. Go to Manage Business > Marketing.

  2. Under Blast campaign client settings, select either All clients or Primary clients only.

  3. Your selection is saved automatically and will apply to future blast campaigns.

Once a setting is selected, you'll see the average number of eligible clients each location can reach based on that setting. This number updates dynamically over time as clients continue to interact with your business.

NOTE: Changing this setting reverts any currently scheduled blast campaigns back to Draft status. You'll be prompted to confirm this before saving.

Viewing your eligible client breakdown by location

Click View breakdown by location from the Marketing settings page to see how many clients are currently eligible to receive marketing at each of your locations, along with the percentage of your total client base that they represent.

The locations column on your campaign list

Your Blast campaigns dashboard (Marketing tab) includes a Locations column, so you can see at a glance which location(s) were included when a campaign was sent or scheduled.

How primary location is calculated

A client's primary location determines which location "owns" them for the purposes of location-aware marketing. Boulevard calculates primary location using the following order of operations. A client is evaluated against each rule in order — if they don't qualify for a rule, we move to the next one:

  1. Appointment activity – Based on where the client completed most of their last 3 appointments.

  2. Membership activity – The location where the client's active membership was purchased.

  3. Purchase history – The location of the client's most recent purchase.

  4. Client origin – The location where the client's profile was created.

  5. Single-location business or Waitlist activity – For single-location businesses, this is your default location. For multi-location businesses, this is the location of the client's most recent waitlist request.

NOTE: A client can only be assigned to one primary location at a time, and their primary location is recalculated every time they interact with a business — so it may change over time.

Clients without an assigned primary location

In some cases, a small subset of clients may not have a calculated primary location. These clients are still visible at the business level, but they won't be included in any location's marketing communications by default.

If you have access to Blast campaign client settings, you'll have the option to select a fallback location for these clients at the time you send a campaign. If you don't have access to this setting, you won't see this option, and the blast won't be sent to clients without an assigned primary location.

FAQ

Is there a cap on the number of clients a location can market to, even if they're all primary clients?

No. There's no set cap on the number of primary clients a location can send marketing communications to.

How does a client get assigned to a primary location?

Primary location is calculated automatically using the order of operations above — there's no manual assignment.

If my business uses memberships, will this change any existing primary location assignments?

It's possible. Since membership activity is now factored into the primary location logic, some clients' primary locations may update to reflect this; for example, a client who previously qualified based on purchase history may now be assigned based on where their active membership was purchased instead.

Is there a report showing all clients and their primary locations?

Not at this time. This is something we're planning to support in future reporting updates.

What happens to a scheduled blast campaign if I change my Blast campaign client settings?

Any scheduled campaigns will revert to Draft status, and you'll be prompted to confirm this before your setting change is saved.
